چکیده

The sudden surge toward nuclear power throughout the world has given rise to some serious questions about its potential effect on many facets of our complex civilization. The social, economic, military, and geopolitical implications are staggering and far beyond the comprehension of most of us. Of immediate and practical concern to all, however, is the impact of nuclear power on our local environment, and specifically on the quality of air and water resources. It is prudent, therefore, to evaluate the probable effects of routine discharges from nuclear power plants on the atmosphere and on natural waters and to assess the possible consequences of a serious accidental discharge of radioactivity. The past, present, and probable future growth of commercial nuclear power in the U.S. is shown at the right. It is estimated that by 1980 the installed nuclear capacity will be about 100,000 electric megawatts [MW( e ) 1 or about 37 percent of the then total electric capacity. By the turn of the century, more than half of the capacity will probably be nuclear. In order to weigh the probable and potential impact of commercial nuclear power on the environment, let us consider the major types of nuclear reactors and the nature of their waste products. Almost all large commercial nuclear power reactors in the United Estimated Future Growth of Commercial Nuclear Power

Nuclear Power: Is It Blessing Or Disaster in East Asia?

Dear Editor-in-Chief Nuclear energy is economically feasible. Therefore, nuclear power plants produce about 16% of the world’s electricity nowadays. Calder Hall in the United Kingdom is the world’s first commercial nuclear power station in 1956 (1). In the United States, Shippingport was first operated since 1957. However, the accident like Three Mile Island and Chernobyl disaster had awakened ...

Modal Analysis of Spent Fuel Cask for WWER-1000 Reactors

The Spent Fuel Assemblies (SFAs) of WWER-1000 reactors are planned to be transported by special containers which are supposed to be designed in a manner to stand against vibrations and impacts in order to protect the spent fuel from any possible damage. The vibration opposition of these containers shall be far beyond the critical resonance, because the resonances about the natural frequency of ...

The problem of used nuclear fuel: lessons for interim solutions from a comparative cost analysis

An acceptable long-term solution for used (spent) fuel from nuclear power reactors has evaded all countries engaged in the civilian nuclear fuel cycle. Furthermore, many countries are trying to develop interim storage solutions that address the shortage of storage in the spent fuel cooling pools at reactors. The United States has a particularly acute problem due to its adherence to an open fuel...

Role of FDG-PET/CT in Assessing the Correlation Between Blood Pressure and Myocardial Metabolic Uptake

Objective(s): We aimed to assess the association between blood pressure and LV myocardial uptake of FDG, hypothesizing that subjects with raised blood pressure would have higher FDG uptake. Methods: We analyzed 86 healthy controls who underwent PET/CT imaging 180 minutes following FDG (4 MBq/Kg) administration. LV myocardial analysis was perf...

Elevated childhood cancer incidence proximate to U.S. nuclear power plants.

Numerous reports document elevated cancer rates among children living near nuclear facilities in various nations. Little research has examined U.S. rates near the nation's 103 operating reactors. This study determined that cancer incidence for children < 10 yr of age who live within 30 mi (48 km) of each of 14 nuclear plants in the eastern United States (49 counties with a population > 16.8 mil...
